Hematite

Other gems

This widely found iron ore (red iron) exhibits rhombohedral crystallisation. Hematite is a mineral found in magmatic effusion rock and in hydrothermal veins. It is also formed by limonite recrystallisation.

Hematite has a grey colour verging on black, but when reduced to power it becomes blood red, which explains its name.
